It's time for our 12th annual adult spelling bee, Spell Check Live!! As always, teams from our community will compete to determine which team is champion in spelling.

Where: Lanier Tech Conference Center

Cost: $5 for audience members

September 8, 2011 was proclaimed Georgia Literacy Day by Governor Nathan Deal to encourage citizens to support literacy campaigns in their local communities. Also, the week of September 12-18, 2011 has been proclaimed as Literacy Week.

Forsyth Reads Together is a county-wide program to promote reading for pleasure in our community. The event is hosted by Forsyth County Public Library with support from Literacy Forsyth and the FCPL Friends & Advocates. The 2011 selection is The Life and Times of Louisa May Alcott, 1832 - 1888. Registration for free General Educational Development (GED) exam preparation classes will be held at Lanier Technical College on Tuesday, March 1 and Tuesday, March 22. Registration begins at noon and takes approximately four hours to complete. Lanier Technical College is located at 7745 Majors Road in Cumming. For information, please call 770-871-6987.

Due to last week's snow storm, registration originally scheduled for January 10 has been rescheduled for Monday, January 31st at Lanier Technical College, 7745 Majors Road in Cumming. Register in person only between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. in room 237. Proof of legal U.S. residence required. For information, please call 770-781-6787. Free English as a Second Language classes are held throughout the county and begin on February 1st.

On Monday, November 29, 2010 Literacy Forsyth was one of several local non-profits to receive funding from Sawnee Electric Membership Corporation's Operation Round-up program. Operation Round-up channels donations from Sawnee customers to charities in Dawson and Forsyth Counties.

Cumming, November 9, 2010 – The State Board of The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) has awarded Forsyth County Certified Literate Community status. This resolution is recognition of Forsyth County’s success in establishing an effective, sustainable adult education program and in reaching its 10-year goal of elevating literacy rates among a targeted adult population.

Literacy Forsyth's annual adult spelling bee fundraiser was held on October 25. Nine local teams competed for prizes and a travelling trophy. The Library Lexicons, the Forysyth County Library team, successfully spelled gigue and porphyry to win the event.

A new class is being offered for adult immigrants who are seeking U.S. Citizenship via the Naturalization process. The class covers the following:
-- Preparation for the Naturalization Test
-- Overview of the Naturalization process
-- U.S. History
-- U.S. Civics and The Constitution
The class will be held at Lanier Technical College, Mondays and Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. -- 9:00 p.m. Classes begin on October 4 and end on December 9. The class and all materials are free to county residents.
