September 8, 2011 was proclaimed Georgia Literacy Day by Governor Nathan Deal to encourage citizens to support literacy campaigns in their local communities. Also, the week of September 12-18, 2011 has been proclaimed as Literacy Week.
Together with Georgia's Certified Literate Community Programs, the Governor hopes to increase awareness surrounding literacy and adult education issues. One in five American adults cannot read or write sufficiently, and in the state of Georgia, 1.4 million adults have not completed high school. In Forsyth County, nearly 22% of adults between the ages of 18-24 have not completed high school.
Literacy Forsyth encourages community members to celebrate Literacy Day by visiting the Forsyth County Public Libraries. Currently, the library has several programs to promote reading for children and adults. Visit the Library website to learn more!
